The latest generation of wireless technology marks a dramatic shift. Every new generation looks to increase the capacity and bandwidth of a fixed amount of spectrum. But the developers of 5G learned more lessons from the previous LTE technology than just higher speeds.

5G is not just a new radio access standard. Rather, the innovation is the integration of multiple networks serving many different sectors and applications – from multimedia and virtual reality (VR) / augmented reality (AR) to Machine-to-Machine (M2M), the Internet of Things (IoT), public safety, high-speed transport and Smart Cities.

One of the key lessons from the roll out of 4G LTE was the ability to work with other network technologies, in particular Wi-Fi. As a result, the definition of 5G over the last decade has deliberately included the ability for different networks to work together.
