Here’s a Review of What’s New So Far in 2019

2019 has been a big year for Ekahau products. We started the year with our biggest product release ever, Ekahau Connect, including:

  • Ekahau Pro 10
  • Ekahau Sidekick
  • Ekahau Survey for iPad
  • Ekahau Capture
  • Ekahau Cloud

Since the release, we have been pretty busy with continuous updates. For example, we have released two major and five minor releases for Ekahau Survey. We have done one major and five minor releases for Ekahau Pro. Even Ekahau Sidekick had a few nice firmware updates.

Here’s an overview of the updates we have made.

Ekahau Sidekick

For Ekahau Sidekick, we have released two very nice updates, the focus being on using the Sidekick’s internal SSD as project storage for local collaboration and being able to capture packets. You can securely store all your project files to Ekahau Sidekick with Ekahau Pro and access them for example, with Ekahau Survey for iPad, or make them available to your colleagues using Ekahau Pro as well.

Being able to perform packet captures with Ekahau Sidekick has been one of the most requested features since we launched Ekahau Sidekick in 2017. With the packet capture capability and Ekahau Sidekick’s two enterprise-grade AP radios, you can capture on multiple channels simultaneously, for example, when you want to perform roaming analysis.

Ekahau Survey for iPad

Ekahau Survey for iPad was released as part of the Ekahau Connect launch. Ekahau Survey is the first professional-grade application for Wi-Fi site surveys and troubleshooting on Apple iOS devices. Even though the product was only recently released, we have been able to make six updates already:

  • Ekahau Survey 1.0.0
  • Ekahau Survey 1.0.1
  • Ekahau Survey 1.0.2
  • Ekahau Survey 1.0.3
  • Ekahau Survey 1.1.0
  • Ekahau Survey 1.1.1
  • Ekahau Survey 1.1.2

The version 1.0.0 was obviously our Minimum Viable Product, including only the features to get the site survey job done and to get the product onto the hands of actual users. Thanks to our extensive beta test program and our 350+ beta testers, the quality of the product has been very solid since the launch. We’ve only needed to do a handful of bug fixes and other small improvements.

Naturally, the first version of Ekahau Survey was not perfect and we were a bit embarrassed by it, but that’s how all great products come to life. Late August we did the first major update based on the user feedback, including several of these great features:

  • Create projects from scratch with the iPad app – Ekahau Survey and Ekahau Sidekick is all you need to get going!
  • Collaborate with others and share your work with your colleagues within the app
  • Easily find the project you are looking for with the Project List view’s search, sort, and filter capabilities
  • Completely re-done: Undo / Redo capability – as we really did not get it right on the first version… and thanks to the feedback, it works great now!
  • Plus, of course, several other smaller performance, usability, and ‘look & feel’ improvements

If you have not yet seen what the Ekahau Survey for iPad is about, please watch the webinar we did a few months back https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUfb9Nwbpcw.

Ekahau Pro

For Ekahau Pro we have made a whopping six releases this year alone:

  • Ekahau Site Survey 9.2.6
  • Ekahau Pro 10.0.0
  • Ekahau Pro 10.0.1
  • Ekahau Pro 10.0.2
  • Ekahau Pro 10.0.3
  • Ekahau Pro 10.0.4

Early this year, we said our fond farewells to 9.x.x product versions and to our old Ekahau Site Survey product name with the ESS 9.2.6 release. In April we came out with our biggest release…ever? Ekahau Site Survey shed its skin and emerged on the other side as Ekahau Pro 10, with a mind-boggling number of new features, a new outlook, and more improvements than you can count!

Wait, what’s that? The next signpost in the distance seems to be saying “10.1.0” and it’s closing in fast!

Before that, here’s a brief summary of the main events for Ekahau Pro in the year 2019:

  • Over 10 Major Features Introduced!
  • Dozens of Small Features and Improvements Implemented!
  • Loads of Weird Stuff Fixed!
  • Over 100+ Access Points Added!

However, that’s rather vague, so let’s go through each category in more detail:

Major Features:

Major features in Ekahau Pro are changes or additions to the overall functionality or outlook of the application. Basically, this means cool new features or changes to the applications, which significantly affect how people might use the application.

During this year, the lion’s share of major features has come in our marquee 10.0.0 release, which was released in April. We tend to reserve these kinds of features to major (X.0.0) and minor (10.X.0) releases, which means the next 10.1.0 release will have lots of new and interesting content in it.

So, let’s go through the additions to Ekahau Pro that can be labeled as major features:

  • Ekahau Site Survey is now Ekahau Pro: short and sweet!
  • Ekahau Connect support for Ekahau Pro: users are now able to use Ekahau Cloud to store their projects and to share the projects with Ekahau Survey (our iPad app).
  • Support for 802.11ax access points: We were bright and early to adopt the support for upcoming 802.11ax access points, which are now usable in both simulated and surveyed projects. We also have a decent pile of 802.11ax access points already added to the application. No capacity planning yet, though.
  • Interference detection for RTFM & Visualizations: In 10.0.0 we also implemented a way to detect non-Wi-Fi interference that can clog up the metaphorical Wi-Fi pipes. We show this interference with clear red patterns in RTFM. Also, we implemented a new visualization to show the interference on the map itself, which can be easily reported out of the application.
  • Completely updated outlook for Ekahau Pro: In 10.0.0 as part of the overall technical framework update, we radically updated the outlook of the application. Basically, the slightly scruffy year 2004 appearance was updated to the proper year 2019 outlook! But there’s still more work to be done: these updates will be finally completed in the upcoming 10.1.0 release!
  • Visualization engine rebuilt and updated: Lots of technical detail here, but the visualizations are now significantly more accurate, faster and technically robust. ‘nuff said!
  • File storage in Ekahau Sidekick: While not quite as hot of an item as the previously mentioned Ekahau Cloud support, we now allow users to store their projects also in the Sidekick. This also works as an important method for transferring your project files over to the Ekahau Survey.
  • New & Improved AP list: AP list was also rebuilt in the 10.0.0, so that it’s now much breezier and easier to use – and looks better to boot. Additionally, you can now change the AP model on both simulated and measured access points.
  • Overhaul of Notes: Our notes-tools also received some love, and now users are able to add multiple messages and images to all various Note-tools we have in Ekahau Pro. These tools also allow people across different licenses and platforms (i.e., Ekahau Survey) to chat together in the application.
  • Edit-tool Deluxe: Before Edit-tool was all about selections and dragging things around on the map. Now, it’s also about making quick & easy configurations on those selected items as well. Shown configurations change according to the items selected with Edit-tool.

Minor Features & Improvements:

While there are about a dozen major features released this year, there are also a lot of smaller features and improvements that have been made to help you get your work done more easily and efficiently. All the releases include these types of improvements because we always try to find a way to tweak and improve our products.

Unlike with the major features, there are too many minor features and improvements to list here. However, here are some highlights of some of the smaller delights that have been implemented during this year:

  • Antenna linking for simulated APs: Our Ekahau Masters requested this feature. We heard them and made it happen – and because it also makes sense! This minor feature allows us to link simulated antennas together, so that changing a parameter on one antenna also changes parameters on all antennas. A great example of how we could reduce some mind-numbing repetition and improve efficiency!
  • Visualization legend 2.0: This is a small feature that could belong to the big leagues! The visualization legend was redesigned in 10.0.0 so that it offers both more information and more clarity to the user. This was done through clearly delineated colors, more helpful numbering, and outlook aiming to point the user in the right direction!
  • Measured APs are placed more intelligently: Did you notice this one? This was one of the smarter but easy-to-miss improvements: APs are no longer always placed directly on the survey path but instead Ekahau Pro tries to intelligently place on their correct location, even it if it’s off the path!
  • Mouse scroll wheel zooming added to Ekahau Pro on macOS: Sometimes it’s something as simple as this!
  • Insta-tooltips!: Busy people will appreciate that you can now show visualization tooltips instantly on the map by pressing “T”.
  • Antenna arrows are now hidden on omni-directional APs: A pearl of wisdom from our end-users: sometimes less is more! According to our users, the antenna arrows weren’t very useful on the map for omni-directional APs, so we listened to them and hid them by default.
  • Capacity area coverage requirement adjustments: Previously coverage areas always had the same coverage requirement when created, now the requirements are inherited from the global requirements. This is a very typical quality-of-life improvement that you can find in a release of Ekahau Pro.

These are just a few examples of the smaller features and improvements that have been made over the year. In addition to specific updates, we have also continued to make constant improvements in various ways. Let us count ways:

  • Significant performance improvements: While this is not any single item, we spent a lot of effort in making the performance slicker and faster across the board in Ekahau Pro. The most essential part of these improvements was the improved visualization rendering performance.
  • Graphical touch-ups and facelifts: We never rest on our laurels when it comes to improving the clarity and usability of our user interface. We fine-tuned many graphical aspects of our UI to make them better, more usable, or just plain more pleasing to the eye!
  • Quality of life improvements: We have also made dozens of smaller tweaks all around Ekahau Pro, which can be hard to detect individually, but when bundled up, make a big difference. We try to straighten out our wonky thinking whenever we can, and our users are a great help with that as well.
  • Improvements on access point grouping logic: These are very typical improvements in our releases. We constantly monitor and maintain various grouping logics for the measured APs, which is critical for surveyed radios to be grouped up as a single APs and not just a bunch of scattered radios or SSIDs.
  • Updates to regulatory domains: We also constantly keep our eye on the regulatory domains and their channels around the world, so that they’re up to date. The latest regulatory domain updates were made to Australia, Mexico, and Europe’s regulatory domains.

Bug Fixes:

As we all know, bugs are an unavoidable fact of life in software development. This is also true with Ekahau Pro and we (cringingly) acknowledge it. However, this doesn’t mean that we accept the problems to be a fact of life.

We are committed to making our software the best version of itself and therefore aim to fix all bugs, defects, and issues we can get a hold on – either through our internal QA or with a little help from our friends, namely you – our dear users!

Over 2019, we’ve fixed dozens of weird things, odd behaviors, and downright harmful occurrences to make the user experience the best it can be.

Access Points & Antennas:

Lastly, we’ve also added over 100 access points and antennas to Ekahau Pro during 2019!

The added APs and their vendors range from the biggest names – to up and coming smaller enterprises. And the catalog of access points in Ekahau Pro keeps on growing – to help you make the network plans you need!

If Ekahau Pro doesn’t have the AP you want, just contact us and we’ll do our best to add the access points you need!
